Strategic Instruction Model (SIM)
The Strategic Instruction Model is a comprehensive approach to teaching learning strategies to students who struggle while becoming fluent and adept readers, writers and learners. The SIM strategies were developed at the University of Kansas, Center for Research on Learning (KU-CRL). Learning strategies teach students how to understand and approach basic and complex academic skills by changing the way a person approaches learning and using information. The SIM strategies focus on making students more active learners by teaching them how to effectively use self-talk to acquire information, store information and demonstrate competence. The strategies teach students how to plan, initiate, monitor and adapt their actions while learning and producing work for school and daily life activities. All of the SIM strategies are empirically and socially validated through extensive research conducted at the KU-CRL.
In addition to teaching all the SIM Strategies, Trish is a SIM Professional Developer and can teach other teachers how to use the strategies with their own students.
